【117】The One With Two Parts, Part II本集简介:莫妮卡带瑞秋上医院。买保险,所以她和莫妮卡身份互换——要约会她俩时,情况变得复杂化。瑞秋认为应坦白她们的身份,莫妮卡坚持要保守秘密,两人争吵,结果在两位医生前互曝其短……
1.Rachel: Well, alright, then, forget it.
Might as well just go home. 好,算了。我们还是回家好了。
might as well: 不妨,最好,might as well + do something
例:
It is chilly outside. I might as well stay at home. 外面冷飕飕的,我还是最好呆在家里吧。
2. Joey: Oh, man. What're the
odds of that happening? 哦,天哪。这种事发生的几率有多少?
odds: 机会,可能性;
由odds拓展开,学习有关它的一些短语:
odds and ends: small objects of different types which are not very valuable or important; 零零碎碎的小东西;也能看到报纸或者杂志会用这个词组来作一个栏目名称。
例:I had the whole house cleaned out except for a few odds and ends that you might want to keep. 我把整个房间都清理干净了,除了一点小东西你有可能需要留着。
by all odds:without question and beyond doubt 毫无疑问地
例:By all odds they should win. 毫无疑问他们应该会赢。
3.Joey: What can I do? Look, I don't want to do anything to
screw it up with Ursula. 我能做点什么?我可不想因为任何事情把和乌苏拉的事情办砸了!
screw up: to make a mess of something 把事情办砸了。
screw 原意是指螺钉,作为动词的screw up,在这里是指把事情搞砸了,是在口语中很常见的一种表达。
例:I screwed up the game. 我把比赛搞砸了!
I screw up all the time. 我总是把事情办得一团砸。
4. Chandler: Man, if you tried something like that on my birthday, you'd be
starin' at the
business end of a
hissy fit. 如果你在我生日那天做出这样的事,那你看见的就是一个刚受过气的人。
stare at: 凝视、盯着看
business end: receiving end承受方。business end表示起作用的那一头,即是(工具与武器)与握端相对的那锋利的一头。
例:Never hold a gun with the business end. 拿枪不要拿枪口那一头。
hissy fit: a short-lived temper tantrum 临时来的脾气。常用词组有have a hissy fit, 相当于throw a tantrum 发脾气。
例:Look at that little boy. He's
having a hissy fit! 快看那个小男孩。他正在发脾气呢。
5. Scenery: Ross stands in the doorway, holding a box, but everyone is too
keyed up to notice that it's him. (场景) 罗斯站在走廊里,手里拿着个盒子,但是每个人都太兴奋了,以致于没有注意到他。
keyed up(about something): to be excited or anxious 兴奋的,紧张的
例:Why are you so keyed up about nothing? 你为何无事而乐?
I was keyed up over the test results. 我对测试结果颇为担心。
6.Rachel: (as Monica) Yeah it is, mostly because I get to
boss people around, which I just love to do. (装作莫妮卡)是的,最重要的是因为我能将人呼来唤去,这是我喜欢做的。
boss people around: boss这里作动词,表示指挥、呼号施令。
例:All she could do is bossing us around. 她只会让我们忙得团团转。
